Manjhi to Stop taking Advantage of Reservation Policy

Patna: Former Bihar Chief Minister and Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) chief Jitan Ram Manjhi on Monday said neither he nor his family members will take advantage of the reservation benefits in the next Assembly and Parliamentary elections.

Manjhi, who belongs to the 'Mahadalit' category, at a press conference in Patna, said that after discussing with his family members, he had decided not to avail reservation benefits to send out a message to others who have been taking advantage of the system even when they don't need it.

"The weaker among us deserve to get the benefit of the reservation. Our immediate family does not need it and will not be taking advantage of it in the next Parliamentary and Assembly elections," he said.

Opponents of reservation policies in India have long maintained that the system was put in place to benefit those who were economically and socially backward, mostly the scheduled caste and scheduled tribe people, but even the 'creamy layer', or those who were affluent and educated, took advantage of the system thus denying the rights of those who actually deserved it.

The former Chief Minister urged other rich and educated Dalits, Mahadalits, and SC/ST leaders to follow his example and forego reservation in favor of those who truly need a helping hand in breaking the shackles of poverty and illiteracy.
