Patna: Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Thursday flagged off the 'Jagriti Rath' from Patna Saheb Gurudwara to spread the teachings of Guru Govind Singh, the 10th Guru of the Sikhs, across eleven states.

Kumar, who participated in the Thursday prayer at the Takht Shri Harmandir Ji Gurudwara, said the city was prepared to host millions of people who would be coming to Patna to take part in the 350th birth anniversary celebration on January 5, 2017.

"We are doing our best to make sure the visitors do not face any inconvenience during their stay in Patna Saheb. The area is being cleaned and an over-bridge is being built for the pedestrians. Three 'tent cities' are also being erected to accommodate the visitors," he said.

The Chief Minister, who has fallen into the habit of touting his dream of an alcohol-free India, compared consumption of liquor in India to the widespread use of opium in China saying just as China became an economic power after banning opium, Indians would be able to compete with the Chinese after prohibition is enforced in the entire nation.

The 'Rath' carrying 16 'shastras', or weapons, of Guru Govind Singh and the Guru Granth Saheb, the holy book of the Sikhs, will travel through nine states including Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Orissa, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Telangana, Rajasthan, Delhi, and Punjab before returning to Patna Saheb in the last week of November. The 50-member team is being led by Jathedar Iqbal Singh.

Two large buses, two mini buses and one sedan are the part of the caravan that includes accountants to keep track of all donations and prominent Sikh religious leaders to talk about the message of peace as envisioned by the 10th Sikh Guru.
