Patna: Merely two days after the city police and the state disaster management kicked off the 'Safety Week 'amidst much hullabaloo to promote safety on Bihar roads and highways, a speeding City Ride bus in Patna on Wednesday evening mowed over a 19-year old student killing him on the spot.

The incident took place at the Kankarbagh Colony intersection when the motorcycle-borne victim, who was identified as 19-year old Sandeep Kumar, the son of a cement trader, was hit by an auto rickshaw. Sandeep, also known as Rinku, fell on the ground with his motorcycle but before he could get up and walk away from the scene of the accident, a speeding City Ride Bus ran over him killing him instantly.

As always, an angry mob caught hold of the bus driver and gave him a serious beating. The crowd then damaged the bus and tried to torch it along with other vehicles in the area but thanks to the timely intervention by the police, a riot-like situation was averted.

Hearing the news of the accident, Sandeep's parents and a sister rushed to the accident site only to find the boy dead in his own pool of blood. Refusing to believe that her son was gone forever, the mother tried to wake him up several times only to be told that he was dead.

According to the reports, some anti-social elements in the crowd, during the melee, tried to molest some girls. Their attempts, however, backfired when the girls pulled out their belts and chased the molesters away.

The police used light force to disperse the mob though no one was said to be hurt in the lathi charge, Additional Superintendent of Police (SP) P K Mandal said.

Son of one Dilip Kumar, a cement merchant in Kankarbagh, the victim was a BA student of the College of Commerce.
