Kanchan Mishra Let Go by
NCW
New Delhi: May 13,
2003
Purnima Advani,
the chairperson of the National Commission for
Women (NCW), after meeting with Kanchan Mishra,
the woman who was reported to be abducted by the
notorious criminal Sultan Mian and forced to marry
him, asked the Bihar police to release her after
Mishra stated that her marriage to Mian was
consensual.
In her deposition
before the NCW on Saturday, Mishra said that she
married Sultan Mian because she loved him and not
because she was forced to do so as reported in the
media. Mishra also said that she was very happy
with Mian and wanted to stay with him.
Advani did,
however, say that Mishra looked a little scared
during her appearance before the NCW.
Mishra's story
caused a huge uproar among many people but in the
end, the only good thing that came out of it was
the arrest of Sultan Mian who has been accused in
dozens of murder, robbery, extortion and abduction
cases. Last week he also confessed of his role in
the murder of Patna City businessman Manoj Kamalia.
Many are hoping it would be enough for the justice
system to send him to into incarceration for life
without parole.
