Biharis are a Tough Lot; Says the CM

Bhojpur: February 19, 2008

At a function organized in honor of visiting Prime Minister of Mauritius Naveenchandra Ramgoolaam at Harigaon in Siwan district, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Tuesday said the Biharis were a tough lot and they would, as always, weather physical and mental assaults on them in states like Maharashtra and Assam.

"Wherever Biharis are, they have made their names strictly on the basis of their hard work, tenacity, and their ability to survive. Mauritius is a great example of that. And if they can build a great nation like Mauritius, they sure can rebuild Bihar as well," Kumar said amidst loud noise of applause.

"People of Maharashtra, when they needed to build their state, did not mind seeking the services of people from Bihar. Now that there work is complete, the same people are now forcing Biharis to leave Maharashtra. This is how some people show their gratitude," Kumar lashed out at the Maharashtrian politicians without mentioning anyone's name.

Talking about the bronze statue of Sir Seewoosagar Ramgoolaam, the first Prime Minister of Mauritius, that was unveiled in Patna on Monday, the Chief Minister said that the statue would remind the people of Bihar about the tenacity of Bihari people.

"Biharis do not depend on handouts; they use their skills, brain, and a lot of hard work to make a name for themselves and that is what makes them special," Kumar said.
