Seminar on Higher Education at Patna College
Patna: February 20, 2008
Patna University Vice Chancellor Dr. Shyam Lal, while addressing at a seminar on higher education at Patna College campus on Wednesday said that the way the government was trying to raise the standard of education in Bihar indicated its determination to revive the old glories of the university that once made it the choice of destination for students from other states and nations.
"Our goals are very lofty but not unattainable. Soon people would be able to see the difference in the education system in Bihar that has suffered in last few years forcing the bright students to leave the state and study elsewhere in the country," Dr. Lal said.
The meet was, however, not without some rough moments particularly when the students demanded the reinstatement of the suspended teacher Professor Nawal Kishore Chowdhary.
When the VC said this forum was not the right platform to discuss such issues, the students chanted anti-VC slogans and tried to disrupt the meeting.
With his wit and sense of humor, Dr. Lal, however, saved the moment and managed to restore order in the meeting hall.
Complaining about poor teaching facilities in Patna University, Randhir Kumar Verma, the general secretary of the PU Teachers' Association, said the university lacked adequate teachers and in the absence of a good library or career counseling facilities, the students of Bihar were still rushing to other states in large numbers.
