Photo by Shashi UttamUrban Development Minister Ashwini Kumar Choubey and Patna High Court Justice Mridula Mishra, at a function organized at Ravindra Bhawan in Patna on Saturday awarded the Maithili language's highest award 'Prabodh Sahitya Samman' to noted Maithili literatteur and critic Mohan Bharadwaj. A check for Rs. 1 lakh was also given to Bharadwaj by the Swasti Foundation of Patna.

"Until regional languages like Maithili, Magahi, and Bhojpuri get the recognition that they richly deserve, Hindi cannot expect to get stronger," Choubey said adding the state government would soon initiate programs to honor other regional languages in Bihar as well.

Describing Bharadwaj as one of the most profound personality in the arena of Maithili literarature, Justice Mishra said that the role of a critic was very important in the development of any language and Bharadwaj filled in this category rather very comfortably.
