RJD Leader Shot Dead in Bhagalpur District
Patna: February 23, 2008
Armed criminals in Nathnagar in Bhagalpur district on Saturday evening gunned down a local Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader creating a riot-like situation when his supporters went on a rampage destroying properties and the railway station while disrupting railway traffic for hours.
According to the police report, Laxmikant Yadav, RJD district president, left a phone booth located in Noorpur Market at around 7:45 pm when three men armed with guns opened fire at him. He was hit in his head and neck and died on the spot.
Yadav's supporters then took the dead body in their custody and blocked NH-80 and destroyed the police booth while ransacking Noorpur police station.
After much effort, the situation was brought under control but situation remains extremely tense in the area.
Incidentally, Yadav's brother Manohar Yadav was also killed in the area nearly four years ago, the police said.
Meanwhile, the RJD leaders in Patna and Bhagalpur have demanded a CBI enquiry into Yadav's killing while accusing the Nitish government of failing to curb crime in the state.
Party state president Abdul Bari Siddiqui, MP Ram Kripal Yadav and some other senior party leaders have left for Bhagalpur to take stock of the situation.
"Under the NDA rule, RJD leaders in Bihar are selectively being targeted and eliminated," said the party spokesperson Shyam Rajak in Patna.
