Block RJD Leader Arrested in Bhagalpur RJD President's Killing

Bhagalpur: February 24, 2008

A day after the murder of Bhagalpur district Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) president Laxmikant Yadav, the police in Bhagalpur on Sunday arrested a RJD activist Chandrashekhar Yadav and his associate Vikki Yadav saying the victim was killed due to an ongoing dispute over a piece of property.

The arrests came after Laxmikant Yadav's son Sameer Kumar on Sunday filed an FIR against the two men and four others including Pradeep Yadav, Dinesh Yadav, Satan Yadav, and Om Prakash Yadav.

Sameer told the police that the six men had been trying to grab a property spread in six bigha in Goldarpatti area in Noorpur and despite an earlier meditation by a district official; they were mounting pressure on his father to give up the land to them.

Meanwhile, RJD leaders including Ram Kripal Yadav and Abdul Bari Siddiqui who arrived in Bhagalpur on Sunday morning said the Nitish government was in total grip of criminals and was singling out the opposition leaders and eliminating them in a systematic matter.

The leaders' statement came as a surprise to many in view of the fact that both the victim and the perpetrators of the crime belonged to the same political party.

Laxmikant Yadav was cremated on Sunday.

The RJD leaders have called for a Bhagalpur bandh on Monday. Security has been tightened in the district in anticipation of more violence during the bandh.
