Five Arrested in Hajipur Attempted Lynching Case

Patna: February 24, 2008

The police in Hajipur on Sunday arrested five persons in the beating case of 19-year old Ravi Kumar who was dragged out of a local hospital and left for dead after serious thrashing before being rushed to the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) where he continues to battle for his life.

As reported previously, Ravi Kumar was being treated for head injuries in a Hajipur hospital on Saturday after having stabbed to death his friend and roommate 18-year old Om Prakash. Suddenly an angry mob rushed into the hospital and dragged a handcuffed Ravi from the operating room and beat him brutally leaving him for dead on the street.

Among the arrested persons is also Santosh Kumar, the brother of Om Prakash, whose arrest created a fresh round of tension as hundreds of villagers, including many women, staged a dharna outside the police station demanding the release of the surviving brother.

Besides Santosh, other arrested persons were identified as Sanjeev Kumar, Sanjay Singh, Mithilesh Kumar, and Harishankar Singh.

Town police station in-charge Vijay Kumar Singh said the arrests were made based on eyewitnesses who identified them as having participated in the lynching process.
