Police to Handle Phalguni Yadav's Suicide Threat

Patna: July 7, 2008

With the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Phalguni Yadav adamant on committing suicide in the wake of the so-called 'assassination attempt' by the Janata Dal (U) leader Narendra Singh in Jamui on May 28, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, on Monday, said he had alerted the Director General of Police (DGP) and other top officials to ensure Yadav does not succeed in his threat and the situation is diffused before any harm is done to him.

The police has created a station diary on Yadav and his bodyguards have also been put on high alert to ensure no self-harm is inflicted on the BJP leader, Kumar said.

If Yadav attempts self-immolation as he had been threatening since the May 28 incident, the police would take appropriate legal actions against him, the CM said adding senior leaders of both parties were trying to come up with a resolution that was agreeable to both parties.

"I do not know what the legal implications of such suicide threat are and that is why I have handed over Mr. Yadav's letter to the DGP," he said.

As reported before, Phalguni Yadav, who was allegedly shoved off of a public platform by the Food and Civil Supplies Minister during a joint public appearance in Jamui, had demanded removal of Singh from the NDA Cabinet saying the minister and his men were trying to kill him.

Yadav has repeated his threats to commit suicide if the Chief Minister failed to remove him from the government.
