Police Arrests Two in PMC Official Murder Case

Patna: July 12, 2008

The Patna police on Saturday arrested two persons from Samastipur in connection with the July 2 killings of Patna Municipal Corporation (PMC) secretary Sayyad Manzar Alam and his wife who were murdered at their residence in Haroon Nagar Colony in Phulwarisharif.

Following raids in Akbarpur and Keshopatti village under Kalyanpur police station in Samastipur district, the police arrested Pankaj and Sonu after they traced calls made by a cell phone owned by Alam's wife Nasreen Jamal, the police said.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amit Kumar said that the police, during its course of investigation, found that the cell phone owned by Nasreen was lost two weeks prior to the couple's killing. Even as the police continued to track calls made by it, they hit a roadblock when the criminals stopped using it for some time.

Then on Wednesday, the police picked up the signal again and based on its location, raided Kalyanpur village on Saturday and arrested Pankaj and Sonu with the phone still in their possession, officials said.

The two men are currently being interrogated by the police, the SSP said.

It is not clear if the two have admitted of their involvement in the killing of the PMC official and his wife.
