Surajbhan Gets Bail; Allowed to go to Delhi

Patna: July 16, 2008

A division bench of the Patna High Court on Wednesday granted bail to the Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP Surajbhan Singh in the Rami Singh murder case less than three weeks after he was awarded life imprisonment by a Begusarai court

The MP who has appealed his case with the Patna High Court will now be able to cast his vote in the upcoming trust motion that would determine the fate of the Congress-led UPA government.

Justice Shivkirti Singh and Justice Abhijeet Sinha, after hearing the bail plea by Singh's lawyers, approved the bail for the Ballia MP and ordered his release from the Begusarai Jail where he had been lodged since his sentencing on June 25.

The same bench also allowed yet another incarcerated MP, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Mohammed Shahabuddin, to take part in the confidence vote to be held in New Delhi on July 22.

The Siwan MP who is serving life term in the 1999 killing of a CPI-ML activist, would leave for New Delhi on July 10 in judicial custody and return to Bihar on July 23.

He was also ordered to bear the travel expenses of the accompanying security officials.
