Disgraceful!
Patna: June 5, 2008
Hippocrates, the 4th century philosopher and the father of medicine who demanded from his medical students to take a vow to "never do harm to anyone" must be turning in his grave when the Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) junior doctors launched a horrendous attack on journalists who were trying to cover the ongoing doctors' strike at the hospital.
Carrying hockey sticks, iron rods, pistols, knives and other weapons, the junior doctors turned the Ashok Rajpath into a full-fledged battlefield after they took three press reporters hostage and beat them up until they all became unconscious and collapsed on the ground.
In a typical criminal fashion, these 'future doctors' continued to kick the reporters and beat them up with iron rods and batons until some good Samaritans risked their lives and took away the bleeding journalists to get some much-needed medical attention.
As reported, a number of media-men had gone to the hospital to cover the ongoing strike by the junior doctors. As some of them tried to take their pictures, a group of agitating doctors, who had come to the hospital fully prepared to launch a battle as evident by the iron rods and hockey sticks in their possession, attacked them with brute force.
Those who tried to come in their way were also attacked by the belligerent junior doctors who also destroyed their cameras and snatched their mobile phones, wallets and watches.
Dipuraj, a Hindustan photographer was rushed to the Intensive Care Unit of the PMCH while two other photographers who were identified as Indrajeet Dey and Nagendra were taken to other private nursing homes.
The conditions of all three are said to be critical. More than a dozen other reporters were said to be hurt in the Thursday deadly attack by the junior doctors.
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, while condemning the incident in harsh words, directed the officials to file criminal cases against all those who participated in the attack and arrest them immediately.
"This thing has gone too far and the time has come to take some harsh measures against these doctors," Kumar said.
Opposition leaders in Patna described the incident as a failure of the Nitish administration.
"Never such incident has taken place in the long history of the PMCH but now it has become a den of criminals who obviously are not there to serve the humanity but to take lives like of ordinary citizens," said Congress leader Amlendu Pandey while also demanding a high-level judicial probe in today's shameful incident.
Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Shyam Rajak said that the Chief Minister had lost control over the state and had allowed the criminals to take over the reign.
Meanwhile, a number of reporters' union in Patna have announced their decision to stage a protest on Friday to demand arrests of all criminals currently posing as medical students at the PMCH and monetary help for medical treatment of the injured reporters.
