Shape up or Ship out: CM to PMCH Jr. Doctors

Patna: June 6, 2008

A day after the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) junior doctors displayed one of the most despicable behaviors by assaulting media reporters, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, following a high-level meeting with the Health Minister Nand Kishore Yadav, threatened to shut down the college if the doctors did not change their manners and restored professionalism in the institute.

"These students, by acting like criminals on Thursday, have disgraced the prestige of the PMCH and should be expelled from the college. If things do not improve at the college, the government will be forced to shut it down while keeping the hospital open," Nand Kishore Yadav, the Health Minister said following his meeting with the Chief Minister.

Taking a direct shot at the orthopedic department of the college, Yadav said that these students, once identified, must be rusticated to restore the good name of the college and if the situation still did not improve then the government would be forced to shut down the college and its students transferred to other medical colleges in the state.

"This has gone too far. What they did was completely criminal. There have been just too many incidents in last few weeks alone when patients were beaten or mistreated by the junior doctors. Such disgraceful behavior will not be tolerated in Bihar colleges. The guilty persons must be arrested within next 24 hours and treated like ordinary criminals," Kumar said.

Among those who were present at the meeting including Health Secretary Deepak Kumar, District Magistrate Jitendra Kumar, and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amit Kumar.
