Polytechnic Students on Strike; Threat Self-immolation

Patna: June 6, 2008

Polytechnic Students on Strike. Photo by Anupam SinghStudents of the Saharsa Polytechnic Institute in Patna on Friday held a dharna at the Income Tax roundabout to press for their demands to re-schedule exams for two papers that were earlier scrapped due to disturbance caused by the anti-social elements.

Talking to the reporters, the agitating students said they were given zero mark in the third year exam because of violence at the colleges.

"Though we have the option to appear in the supplementary exams, it does not help us since most employers are not open to any candidate that had to finish the course by means of supplementary exams," said one of the protestors.

"We want exams re-held and results announced without delay so we can move on with our lives," they said adding if their demands were not met without delay, they would be forced to go on a hunger strike or even resort to self-immolation.
