Modi Survives Vote of Confidence
Patna: June 8, 2008
After facing serious attacks from his distracters for nearly two months, Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders and Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi, on Sunday in New Delhi, survived a crucial secret vote of confidence by securing 35 of the 67 votes cast by party legislators.
The unprecedented vote of confidence came into play after several BJP legislators, unhappy with the first and last reshuffle of the Bihar government implemented by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, accused Modi of playing underhanded politics and demanded his ouster.
"Modi has survived the vote of confidence and will continue to be the leader of the legislature party. He will also remain the Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar," said party senior leader Ravi Shankar Prasad following the outcome of the vote of confidence held under close vigil of Sushma Swaraj and Venkaiyah Naidu.
Shortly, Modi said that he was pleased with the outcome and now was the time to leave personal differences behind and work together to bring progress to Bihar.
"We can now concentrate on those issues that matter Bihar the most and also get ready for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections to wrestle power from the UPA that has utterly failed on issues like rising prices and security of the nation," he said.
