CM Hails Rs. 30 crore Relief Package for Bhagalpur Riot Victims
Patna: June 12, 2008
Chief Minister Nitish Kumar, following the Center's announcement to provide a Rs. 30 crore package to the victims of 1989 Bhagalpur communal riot that left more than 800 people dead, commended the decision saying though it took nearly 20 years to come to this point, it was better late than never.
Talking to the reporters at Patna Airport, Kumar said that he had appealed to the UPA government in 2006 to provide a relief and rehabilitation package to the Bhagalpur riot victims on the pattern of compensation provided to the Sikh riot victims. He had also met with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to seek relief for the Bhagalpur victims.
"This is all a result of our persistence and intense lobbying for justice to the Bhagalpur riot victims," the Chief Minister said.
As reported, the package includes Rs. 3.5 lakh to the surviving members of each riot victim and Rs. 1 lakh to each of those who were seriously injured in the widespread violence that left 844 people dead and scores hurt.
The Central package is over and above the compensation that the state government has already committed to the riot victims.
