PU Students Resort to Begging to Seek an End to Employees' Strike
Patna: June 16, 2008
Patna University (PU) students with affiliations to the National Students Union of India (NSUI) and the Janata Dal (U), on Monday, engaged in 'begging' to collect money for the striking PU employees saying the lack of interest shown by the administration in resolving the crisis led them to resort to begging so the money could go to the 'suffering' staff.
"This strike is hurting the students more than anyone else. Still, the university authorities are showing no sign of attempt to reach an agreement with the striking employees. The deadlock has completely disrupted the functioning of the university and yet there appears to be no end in sight," said Mukesh Kumar Singh, a JD-U student leader.
"The money that we have collected today by begging on the streets would be given to the Vice Chancellor to be deposited in the same account that is used to pay the salaries of the employees," he said.
The students also demanded holding of Patna University Students' Union elections without further delay saying earlier promises by the university officials to hold elections were simply meant to buy time and there was no genuine desire on their part to restore the tradition that once made Patna University great.
