Junior Doctors Withdraw Strike; at least for now

Patna: June 17, 2008

Once again, treating the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH) as their personal property, the junior doctors, a day after they went back to their off again, on again strike, returned to work on Tuesday with one caveat – "succumb to our demands or we go back on strike a week from today".

"Take back the criminal cases against 11 junior doctors, reinstate Dr. R. K. P. Sinha as the college principal, and provide security to us from disgruntled media-men and angry relatives of patients," the returning doctors said.

"If our demands are not met within one week, we will resume our strike," they said.

Meanwhile, officials claimed normalcy had returned to the hospital and patients were once again returning to their rooms though till late evening the campus wore a deserted look.

Dr. Arun Kumar Thakur, the Indian Medical Association, Bihar chapter, welcomed the withdrawal of strike and commended Dr. C. P. Thakur, Dr. S. N. Arya, Dr. Rajeshwar Thakur, and Dr. D. K. Chowdhary for brokering with the striking junior doctors and helping end the strike.
