Ammonia Tank Blast Kills Two in Sheikhpura

Patna: June 20, 2008

Two workers at an ice cream factory in Sheikhpura in Patna district on Friday died when an ammonia tank exploded causing the authorities to evacuate the area after people there complained of dizziness and other symptoms following inhalation of the gas, officials in Patna said.

According to the report, the tank exploded during the refilling of compressed air in it also gravely injuring the owner of the factory Pintu Singh.

The explosion was so strong that it destroyed the roof of the factory. People more than 2 kilometers away claimed of hearing the sound of explosion that jarred several buildings in neighborhood, the police said.

DSP Rajesh Kumar, coupled with fire department officials arrived at the site of accident and help evacuate the area and surveyed the factory for damages and injuries.

The victims were identified as Indradeo Sao of Patna and Mohammed Safiq of Jamalpur.

Pintu Singh and about half a dozen people who complained of nausea and dizziness caused by gas inhalation were rushed to nearby hospitals, officials said.

Police are investigating the case.
