JD-U, NCP Workers Clash; Many Injured
Patna: June 23, 2008
Supporters of Janata Dal (U) and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) clashed with each other after the JD-U activists tried to stop the NCP backers from burning an effigy of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar near the Income Tax roundabout in Patna on Monday.
According to the police report, the dalit cell of the JD-U was holding a dharna at the Income Tax roundabout when a group of NCP supporters arrived there and tried to burn the effigy of the Chief Minister to protest against the Sunday killing of a BDO in Sheikhpura district.
Irked by that, the JD-U activists tried to prevent the NCP workers from burning the effigy. This led to an argument that soon turned into a pitched battle between the two factions with each beating the other with sticks, bottles and other items.
Thanks to the quick intervention by the Kotwali police, the situation was brought under control though by then at least half a dozen people from both sides sustained injuries and had to be taken to nearby clinics for first aid treatment.
An FIR was lodged against the JD-U workers by the NCP activists, Kotwali police station Mundrika Prasad said.
The NCP leaders have threatened to launch a statewide agitation if the accused were not arrested within next 24 hours.
