Court Convicts LJP MP Surajbhan Singh in Murder Case

Patna: June 24, 2008

A fast track court in Begusarai on Tuesday convicted Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP from Ballia Surajbhan Singh in the killing of Rami Singh, a farmer who was gunned down in Begusarai district in January 1992 reportedly over a land dispute.

After hearing the closing arguments from the prosecution and the defense, fast track court judge Ravi Prakash Dhar Dubey found Surajbhan Singh, Jaijai Ram Singh, and Radhe Singh guilty of murdering Rami Singh.

Two others also facing murder charges in the same case died before the case could go to trial.

The MP, along with the other two convicts, were handcuffed and sent to jail under judicial custody.

It may be recalled that Begusarai public prosecutor Ram Naresh Sharma who was earlier handling the Surajbhan case was shot dead in his house in Begusarai on November 8, 2007.

Hearing on the punishment would be held on Wednesday in the Begusarai court, Special Public Prosecutor Shyameshwar Dayal said.
