Women Commission Appeals for Active Participation
Patna: June 24, 2008
Lacy Singh, the State Commission for Women (SCW) chairperson, during a workshop on the 'Role of Women in Panchayat in Patna District' on Tuesday said the women should break out from their stereotypical roles and take matters in their own hands to play more prominent parts in the government and other areas.
"Women like Sarojini Naidu, Kasturba Gandhi, Medha Patkar, and Sania Mirza have proven that women can walk shoulder to shoulder with any men and there is no reason why should they be limited to the traditional roles," Singh said.
She also praised Chief Minister Nitish Kumar for fulfilling his electoral promise to provide 50% reservation for women in the Panchayat elections.
"By doing so, he actually fulfilled Mahatma Gandhi's dream who was a true champion of women empowerment," she said adding the ball was now in the women's court who must prove that they can come out of the shadow of their husbands and brothers and work
"A revolution has started in the state. Power has been bestowed on women; now they have to prove themselves," she said and added the women Panchayat representatives would have to shed the husband-brother-son tag and work separately to establish their own identities.
