LJP MP Surajbhan Singh, Two others Sentenced to Life

Patna: June 25, 2008

A court in Begusarai on Wednesday awarded Lok Janshakti Party (LJP) MP Surajbhan Singh and two others life imprisonment in the 1992 killing of Rami Singh, a farmer, in Begusarai district.

In a packed court, Fast Track court judge Raviprakash Dhar Dubey awarded life terms to the MP from Ballia, Jaijairam Singh, and Radhe Singh and a fine of Rs. 25,000 each besides three more years of imprisonment on Arms Acts.

Special Public Prosecutor Shyameshwar Lal Dayal, in his final statement, asked the court to give death sentences to all three convicts while the lawyers defending the LJP leader and the other two pleaded for leniency in sentencing.

All three were then handcuffed and whisked away to the division jail.

Defense lawyers said they would challenge the fast track court judgment in a higher court and if needed, would even go to the Supreme Court.

"The LJP leader is a victim of a political conspiracy hatched by his enemies and we would appeal the judgment in a higher court in next few days," Mansoor Alam, Singh's attorney said.
