Rudy Wins Rajya Sabha By-election

Patna: June 26, 2008

Rudy Wins Rajya Sabha By-election.Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy, on Thursday, was elected to the Rajya Sabha in the by-election necessitated by the earlier ouster of BJP member Captain Jai Narain Nishad.

Rudy defeated the Independent candidate Shiv Shankar Nishad by securing 148 votes as against Nishad's six votes.

Mr. Rudy polled 148 votes while Nishad could muster only six votes.

Nishad, though an Independent candidate, was being supported by the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). On Thursday, however, hardly any RJD leader cared to show up for the voting prompting the BJP state president Radha Mohan Singh to say that fielding of Nishad was done only to muddy the water when it was clear from the beginning that Rudy was poised to secure the Rajya Sabha seat.

Jai Narain Nishad's membership from the Rajya Sabha was cancelled earlier by the Election Commission (EC) after BJP leaders sought his ouster openly hobnobbing with the RJD and engaging in anti-party activities.
