Governor Gavai's Transfer Raises Eyebrows in JD-U

Patna: June 28, 2008

Janata Dal (U) MP and party spokesperson Shivanand Tiwari in Patna on Saturday expressed his reservations over the sudden transfer of Bihar Governor R. S. Gavai saying the move that came out of nowhere raised serious doubts about the intention of the Congress in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

"Governor Gavai was doing a great job in Bihar and was liked by everyone. He was committed to change the shape of education Bihar as was evident by several measures introduced by him during his short tenure of two years in the state," Tiwari said.

"The fact that the NDA government in Bihar had a very affable relationship with the Raj Bhawan could not be stomached by the UPA leaders who are looking forward to fortify their base from all sides in light of the coming Parliamentary elections," he further said.

Removal of Governor Gavai without any legitimate reason could also be in violation of the Sarkaria Commission recommendations, the JD-U leader said.

As reported before, Congress, in a sudden move last week, announced its decision to transfer Gavai as the Governor of Kerala while bringing Kerala Governor R. L. Bhatia to Bihar.

The move is being seen as a political ploy by the Congress that is desperate to regain its strength in Bihar after steadily losing its prominence during the long Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) regime in the state and its continued downfall in the current NDA rule.
