Jamshed Ashraf Re-elected Chairman of the Haj Committee.  Photo by Anupam SinghJanata Dal (U) legislator Jamshed Ashraf on Saturday was re-elected the chairman of the Bihar State Haj Committee after other candidates withdrew their names just minutes before the election.

Ashraf had earlier resigned from the same post after being included in the NDA cabinet following a massive reshuffle by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar last month.

Minority Welfare Chief Secretary Afzal Amanullah who was also present during the electoral process, congratulated Ashraf and offered him sweets on his re-election.

Among those withdrawing their candidacy in favor of Ashraf were Mufti Abdul Wahab and Iliyas Hussain.

In his address, Ashraf said he would work to ensure the entire process involved in undertaking the Haj journey was simplified and mistakes committed in the past were not repeated this year. He also said he would contact the Central Haj Committee to extend the deadline to apply for the pilgrimage from May 31 to a later date in June.
