Police Resorts to Lathi Charge on Railway Job Seekers
Patna: May 26, 2008
The police in Patna at Jagjiwan Stadium in Khagaul resorted to lathi charge when hundreds of candidates gathered there for a physical test required for various positions in the Indian Railways went on a rampage after the authorities postponed the tests till Tuesday in view of the rain water accumulated inside the stadium.
Pressing to reschedule the test for next week, the protestors who had come from across the state, said that the authorities decision to hold the test on Tuesday would only complicate the matters since other tests were already scheduled for Tuesday.
Angered by the decision, the candidates blocked the gate of the stadium and pelted stones at the security jawans. When attempts to calm down the protestors yielded no result, the Railway Security Force jawans then resorted to lathi charge that left over two dozen candidates and police officials injured.
Several members of the media were also hurt in the incident.
After more than two hours of negotiation, the situation was brought under control and traffic was restored in the area.
Security has been tightened for Tuesday's program.
