'Honeymoon' for PU VC Shyam Lal Nearing End

Patna: May 29, 2008

After driving the former Vice Chancellor (VC) Dr. Y. C. Simadri out of the university on various charges - some real, mostly made-up - Patna University employees are now gunning for the skin of the current VC Dr. Shyam Lal accusing him of neglecting their 'long-standing' demands while threatening to go on a long strike if the VC did not dance to their tunes.

On Thursday, the university employees shut down the office and protested outside the office building chanting anti-VC slogans saying they would only work half day between May 29 and June 4 in a display of their dissatisfaction against the university authorities.

"The Vice Chancellor is being manipulated by other officials who have no interest in resolving our issues," said one of the protestors.

The Patna University employees are demanding filling in of all posts so they do not have to compensate for others' work, a 6% raise in their dearness allowance, appointments on the basis of recommendations, among many others.

A complete shut down of the university has also been planned for June 6, they said.
