PU VC Taken Hostage by Protesting Employees. Photo by Anupam SinghPatna University employees on Friday took Vice Chancellor Dr. Shyam Lal hostage and kept him locked in a room for nearly three hours while bringing the entire functioning of the university to a screeching halt to press for their demands.

Over 500 employees of the university, after forcing the offices to close, shouted anti-administration slogans and accused the Vice Chancellor of going back on his words.

"The university has shown no sympathy or concern for our demands that include a 6% raise in our dearness allowance, arrear payment, and employment based on recommendations. We are not going to allow the university to function until our demands are met without any preconditions," said Vinod Mishra, the leader of the university employee union.

The protestors also forced the officials to postpone their prescheduled syndicate meeting and disrupted the power supply within the campus.

After much effort, security officials were able to free the Vice Chancellor who assured the agitators to consider their demands and hold a meeting with their representatives.
