Police Investigating Threat on Acharya Kunal's Life

Patna: Oct. 2, 2008

In a rather shocking revelation, authorities in Patna on Thursday said someone whose identification is yet to be ascertained, had hired contract killers to get rid of Bihar Religious Board chairperson Acharya Kishore Kunal in what is being seen as a case of professional jealousy.

Kunal, in a report to the CID Special Branch IG P. K. Thakur, said he had received a text message on his mobile on March 17 from someone who had said that he was hired by certain people to kill him.

The message of the sender, however, said he refused to carry out the diktat after which the criminals threatened to eliminate him.

Kunal, in his report, said that while he did not take the text message seriously at the time he received it, he felt threatened again in the last few days that led to his filing of the report with the IG.

The police traced the phone to someone in Bhadraghat in Patna but when he was contacted, he said that he had lost that phone more than a year ago.

Thakur said the case is being investigated by Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Amit Kumar.

"I have been threatened of dire consequences in the past as well but I have never taken them seriously until now when I indeed feel my life could be in danger," Kunal said.

Officials are focusing on a priest in Begusarai who had earlier tried to hire killers from Gopalganj to get rid of Kunal, the police said.
