DSP Akhileshwar Prasad Singh was killed by Maoist rebels on 3rd April 2006. Without any fanfare within a week or two he is almost forgotten. I was unable to find a picture of this brave hero for this article, and internet and newspapers are full of criminals and absconding fugitive’s picture.

Police officers often get injured and sometime killed in encounter with criminals. But this incident is not a routine and normal incidence. In a state where most people who have any avenue, leave in a heartbeat and hardly visit or do anything for the state other than giving advices honest, police officers like Akhileshwar Prasad is the last hope of people and last fort of law and order. We can simply not afford to lose them and forget them that easily.

These honest officers are doing a job which is very critical, very dangerous, low paid , unappreciated and sometime humiliating due to the presence of corrupt senior bureaucrats and ministers. When we all fuss about corruption and irresponsibility in police department, it will be a highly irresponsible for us to ignore sacrifice of a honest officer like Akhileshwar Prasad.

A police officer that is posted in Bihar’s high crime area is at least taking three time more risk than his counterpart. Needless to say they should be rewarded appropriately and given recognition. When Mr. Nitish Kumar is asking for special status for Bihar he should also give special credit to police officers who perform and make ultimate sacrifice. Although Mr Nitish Kumar awarded financial help and job for a kind few other things must be done at least which are:

1. Family does not go through the painful bureaucracy for getting economic help
2. All children of such people receive best education
3. Criminals responsible are given swift justice
4. Some kind of organization or memorial (or even a website) be created for such hero.

Last year Government of Bihar forgot to send names of brave and honest officers for receiving medals by the Government of India. I hope someone will read my article and mark in their calendar so that they don’t forget names this time also.

Among many reasons of backwardness of India and especially Bihar, one reason is that honest, sincere, educated, brave and hardworking persons are considered burden to society and their sacrifice just becomes statistics. This gives very wrong signal to other honest person who chose alternate paths.

While thinking about this incidence I remembered another shameful incidence. Just few years after "Operation Blue Star" a prostitution racket was uncovered in which few of the females were wives, daughter or sisters of the some of army personnel killed in an encounter and they were forced for this trade as after losing their loved ones and sometime single bread earner government took long time to give them economic help. "WHAT A SHAME!"

Well , few people who had some heartburn when I compared India with America in my article “When India will become America?”, here is one more. In America, almost in every city there is a “Vietnam Memorial” for fallen heroes of this war. Every police officer killed on duty is remembered forever (at least for a generation) and families never go through any economic or financial hardship.

We can start now by recognizing sacrifice of Late Shri Akhileshwar Prasad ji, make sure that he receives what he deserves posthumously and though his family will never get him back, at least they get a decent living.

Comments:
I totally agree with Mr. Pandey's comment here that something needs to be done for such rare but really brave heroes in Bihar. I remember one such SP from Dhanbad Late Shri Randhir Varma who also laid his life on duty. When I was in school at that time, I wanted to be an SP like him and he was my hero. In that episode, there was at least something done to make his memorial. I guess his cause was probably helped by the fact that his wife became the MP of Dhanbad later on. I am afraid probably sacrifices of this brave office would be just forgotten in official files and his family would be made to struggle to meet their ends even. All this would probably lead others to say cynically that "kya fayada hua jaan dekar ke, hero banane chale the ". What a shame! In one of the recent articles on Patnadaily.com, a current SSP commented that his life would be taken away like this DSP by Ranvir Sena men. I guess the comment sums up all the feeling that other cops in the force may be having about the sacrifices of Shri Akhileshwar Prasad Singh. . When such heroes are far and few these days in Bihar Police force, I would have been more happy if the Govt had tried to do more to show to the other members of the force that the Govt and society really cares about their sacrifices. But again, being on the sidelines here I dont know how and in what ways ordinary people like me can contribute to this good cause. Of course, I would always remember this brave officer like Late Shri Randhir Varma for his exemplary bravery and feel that may be Bihar Police probably has few officers who put service before self. - Ravindra Kumar, USA - Apr. 20, 2006
