Having met Dr. Papiya Ghosh in the U.S a few years back, I was following with keen interest the progress of the case and some of the readers' responses in your columns. My heartfelt condolences to the family of the bereaved professor.

The work Dr. Ghosh had been doing would have brought kudos to the academicians in Bihar because it was a pioneering work on one of the uncharted subjects in the post partition era of the state. But cruel hands nipped that effort in the bud.

But that was not the intention of writing this letter. Look at the news emanating daily from Bihar, take your own patnadaily.com. Four out five news items are crime related. What message of Bihar are we giving to the investors and to people outside Bihar? No I do not accept that the media is ganged up against Bihar. I can say from personal experience, that I did not feel safe after sunset.

Our new Chief Minister is undoubtedly trying his best to improve things, but it seems time is against him. He and his team of administrators have yet to instill confidence and sense of security among the people. Why should the name of Patna ever be listed as the crime capital of India? Police and administrative efficiency must be raised many notches up, crimes must be investigated and their perpetrators brought to justice at quickest possible time. Delays without valid reason are perceived by people as a form of shielding the culprits, or 'sweeping issues under the carpet', which Bihar has often been accused of.

The brutal murder of an innocent and respected person like Dr. Papiya Ghosh is a pointer in this direction. I read that 4 persons have been arrested, and 2 more are yet to be nabbed. That was over two weeks back, but then what ? People have a right to know, because those murderers are still at large, and many more who are mingling with the public are watching the outcome.

Dr. Ghosh's murder is indeed a very sad event, but it's a wake-up call if a renaissance in Bihar is to come about.

Is anyone listening?
