Racing With an Unwilling Donkey

Bihar CM's chair is a "throne of thorns". Bihar under 15 years of Laloo regime developed cancer. Lalooji's regime set examples for people below by indulging in scam after scam and so, with the police force too adopting the ways of the regime, the medicine for the cancer also became spurious. So when Nitish Kumar took over he was faced with the cancer of Bihar and the spurious medicines at hand.

Those who have worked in managerial positions realize that setting up a new system with good work culture and good people is much simpler than rectifying a rotten system. One can not change mind-sets and work cultures over night. Nitish Kumar is holding meetings after meetings with the top brass of the police force and applying pressure on them to get results fast. The top brass is trying to extract work from people with 15 year old mind-sets and work culture. Here we must not forget that the opposition in Bihar is down but not out. They are bent upon ruining Nitish Kumar's image and they want people to become weary and disgusted with Nitish's regime. The sudden spurt in crime does not need to be explained.

By being critical and judgmental too fast we are playing into the hands of the opposition goons. Nitish has spent a few months on the "throne of thorns". He is in the most unenviable position. Let us also face it, none of us would dare to occupy that chair. For Nitish Kumar taking Bihar forward is like trying to race an unwilling donkey (the administration with old time mental paradigm) with an elephant tied to it's tail (the opposition). Let us see the positive side, Nitish Kumar is honest, well meaning, his efforts are in the right direction and visible. He is a good man in a very, very tight spot and needs our encouragement and support more than our disgust. After all how many better options do we have? Lalooji and his cronies are waiting in the wings to take over. If people are impatient with Nitish they will be unwittingly playing into their hands.

Comments:
Dear author, please list all the non-routine concrete positive things that have been done since Nitish Kumar took over.

All I have seen is weakness - Rajendra Singh, Ramashray Singh, Laloo Rabri eviction. They wanted to wait till Kharmas, then Moharam, then Rosh Hoshannah ?!!!

I was the first to urge restraint when people started piling up advice and 'expecting too much' from Nitish a few days into the formation of his Government. I am sad to say that I am concerned now - Simply because I do not see steps in the right direction. Meeting with the Police force ? Nitish is living in fools paradise if he thinks that he can use this police, that has been castrated by Lalooism for 15 years, to go against its handlers - the criminals. Police can give some logistic support but the fight has to come from outside the force. A special task force - the kind used in Mumbai, will be needed. The lal topis have become too accustomed to living on the crumbs thrown their way by the criminals. They are no longer a fighting force. A large segment of this force has become weak psychologically by selling its soul to the criminals.

I need to see some action - if not results, to be able to retain my original optimism. - Aarcee - Jan. 21, 2006

Raj, I agree with you that things may get little worse before it start getting any better. A king has lost his undisputed kingdom after 15 years. A community who gained monopoly in last 15 years is not going to give up everything so soon. The people who were tortured by them are not going to forgive them easily also. Criminals who have become now veterans will not become civilized so soon. They will try their best to revert this process. Few attempts were already made. Some other may their way also but their is no looking back.

This is one way process. There is no going back. Nitish or someone else but no criminals, no liar no more casteism. People had enough . No more tolerance for any crime. Unless someone is traitor, someone is lunatic , someone is coward he should not justify old and anarchist regime. There is no justification that crime is not decreasing so it is same as old time. Everyone can see what old regime did and this regime is doing. If someone chose to close their eyes because of their vested interest then let them do.

I am glad that illiterate and poor people have also realized finally what is going on. This is not a sudden election process. Two election and 6 month of president rule is enough to convince some one that rule of anarchy is over for good. Before also it was running due to betrayal by our national party. A messiah which backstabbed his follower will go in history as a criminal and all criminals are soon going to hell soon. - Manoj Gupta - Jan. 21, 2006

I agree with Aarcee: what the hell is this!? Rabri Devi taking time for kharmas, and Muharram... later they can say we need to celebrate Christmas 2006. I believe that house belongs to the current, ELECTED CM. Let's vacate it instead of spending time playing games. This is an abuse of the public trust. As I have said before, the former CM is just a squatter with better clothes. The Devi-Prasad household thumbs their noses at rightful, lawful demands that they vacate. Just do it in a day and finish the job. I do not trust our Police force any more. I feel that the corruption goes to the bone among the police, and it is difficult to place any confidence that they know what is truly right, let alone will do what is right. I would love to see if the Army can take over like J&K. Just clear the police force and start anew. They are among the biggest criminals in the guise of public protectors.

I am not ready to give him a year or anything more than the 3 months which he promised during the election campaign. His saying he could clean things up in 3 months seems like a lie to get elected. If he was bald-faced lying, then how is he any better than Prasad? Big ideas require bold decisive actions. If Nitish Kumar takes a long look at his own ministers' histories, then he will commit to cleaning them out of the positions and offices they have sullied with their selfish, illegal acts. If he does not begin with these people, crime will only go up. God forbid any tragedies befall Nitish supporters. Until he makes some bold and unprecedented moves, I fear that any momentum he could have used to actually make sweeping changes will be lost. We will have to wait again for another savior to promise us a paradise.

I have heard it said that the surge in crime is directly related to the frustration of the recently defeated opposition. If these things are happening because they lost the election, please tell me who was doing these things before! If this is a valid charge, then does it follow that the current ruling party was responsible for the crime when they were the opposition? Since the NDA promised they will control crime in three months, we can surmise that they assumed this to be true because they were the originators of the crimes, and had plans to stop once they were in power. If the rules of the game are to engage in activities to topple the ruling government, then we can say that the opposition is just doing its job and is justified. - S. M. Khurshid Anwar, New York, USA - Jan. 22, 2006

Khurshid ji, your comments are good but sorry, by looking at your name and comments I can simply say that you are keeping your one eye open and one eye closed. Deep inside your feeling of distrust for BJP and NDA is visible without any doubt. While I can understand your feeling, this should not be more important that your feeling for Bihar.

Nitish is a politician like Laloo. You are taking his 3 months literally and you are not accepting role of any foul play by others. Yes opposition was responsible for increased atrocities on Dalit when Laloo took over reign 15 years back. Yes Ranvir Sena killed more Dalits to destabilize government when Laloo took charge. But now those things are old nightmares.

When whole world sees Nitish as a savior and everyone is feeling pain of Bihar it is really unfortunate that educated Bihari people like you and others are lobbying up because of your old belief. I agree that BJP is not the greatest party neither NDA nor congress but in this time I can see nothing but a burning need for all Biharis to stand firmly behind Nitish and let him get the job done. - Manoj Gupta - Jan. 22, 2006

Manojji, I agree with you. This is what we call right of free speech. Some things we agree about and some things we will not. We like to oppose some stuff and like to accept some. I have posted many times that I am only supporting Bihar and Biharis --- no matter who is ruling until he is doing good for Bihar. The main thing for us is to hold different opinions but live peacefully. Manojji, you are wrong, though about a big point. I am not against Nitish, but I have some expectations from him. I am just worried about his colleagues who have a very dark past. I would like to see that he can break the mold and make a better Bihar. In a world that has become so small, you look at my name and decide things that are not true. If I had no name at all, I would still be a Bihari, born and raised in Bihar, with only good hopes for my home state and my fellow Biharis. - S. M. Khurshid Anwar, New York, USA - Jan. 22, 2006

Manoj Gupta Ji, if a comment is good then just leave it at that and please stop further analysis by linking it with author’s name and religion. Before judging somebody by his name are you happy if others judge your views by your SURNAME?

Manoj Ji till literate people like you will keep differentiating Indians in name of religion many will see no problem in differentiating Hindus in the name of caste! Trust me in case of religion politics, Adwani Ji still had to declare Jinna secular but in caste politics there are so many minority castes that not all minority castes deserve appeasement from leaders of majority caste.

In Bihar it is JD(U) and NDA rather than BJP and NDA. They are two different things. - Vipin Singh - Jan. 22, 2006

Unless we want the level of the discussions in this forum to degrade to the level of blogs, please avoid any personal reference in your comments. Winning a debate at the cost of losing the unity? What love is that for our state? Direct reference to someone's caste/religion will stop many others to write. If I have to say something, should I first change my name because 'Kumod Jha' is not supposed to say that? - Kumod Jha - Jan. 22, 2006
