Corruption, murder, Kidnapping, rape, scam, looting, snatching... like all these social evils rampant in almost all the States of India, regionalism is also a big social stigma on the face of our country. India known to the world as a democratic country characterized by the unity among diversities, regionalism is gradually eating into the vitals of India's democracy.

Last year the attacks in Bihar on the railway passengers from the Northeast by some infuriated Bihari students resulting in the sporadic lethal attacks on Hindi-speaking people residing in Assam were a lesson teaching example for us. This sort of practice is indeed regrettable and condemnable. Equally concerning is the activities of some politicians who are lying in wait to keep playing the parochial card by taking undue advantage of this anti-national situation. Whether in Bihar or in Assam or in any other states of India it is a criminal act to resort to any violence in the name of so-called regionalism. The repercussions of such xenophobic politics might be disastrous not only for the states and their people but for the nation also.

An offshoot of the regionalism is the demand that certain jobs in the railways or any other public utility be reserved exclusively for the local people. I think it will make the people of one state "outsiders" in all other states, giving rise to the anti-outsider agitation in all the states particularly in West Bengal, Maharashtra, and Gujarat where the people of other states
are in a large number from pulling rickshaws to holding the prestigious and higher posts. They may fall a prey to so-called xenophobia.

To conclude, all such anti-national elements indulged in the nefarious deeds of fomenting such a fight like situation in the name of regionalism must be brought to books for safeguarding the unity, integrity, and prosperity of all the states in general and India, in particular.

Comments:
I agree with the thoughts of the writer. I would like to suggest an innovative plan to curve the rise of regionalism. What about reserving the jobs for the people living in other states fully??? This may look abnormal but it would go a long way to curve regionalism, national integrity as well as keeping a check on the corruption which often comes into picture because of the local staff. - Ravish Kumar, Hyderabad - May 9, 2006
