The most populous democracy of the world has just now celebrated its 60th birthday. We discussed a lot about its achievement so I don’t wish to continue with same bragging. Let’s focus on some of the challenges which we have right or which might come in near future.

India is a stable democracy but its neighbors don’t have the same stability. It’s a major concern for India. If there will not be stability in the region you can’t think of an uninterrupted development. Pakistan is burning because of Islamic terrorism and dictatorship while Nepal is struggling with Maoist problem. Sri Lanka is fighting with LTTE while Bangladesh is facing a different power tussle. In short, the entire surrounding is not favorable for a stable region. India must look into this. Though it can’t interfere in internal matters of other countries, it can surely provide some way around, some commitment in a big brother’s role. It’s very important for India’s own security and stability.

Kashmir is another problem which has become a canker now. We need to put some serious thought on this. We need to take some tough decisions, if needed. We can’t / shouldn’t keep ourselves going with this. It reflects our decisiveness and political willingness. We can’t portray a picture of perfect India with a troubled part associated with it. It’s affecting our economy as we spend a huge amount on military forces. It also affects our international image as world can see that we are not able to solve our own problem. It’s a tough call but we need to take it.

Social balance is another problem for India. It may not be visible today but in future it may create internal troubles as some projections we can feel now. Have you ever thought why our own people playing in the hands of others? Let’s come to the point, why some youths from Hyderabad joining hands with other terrorist organizations and planting a bomb, which kills their own city mates? Why Maoists are still active in Andhra, Bihar and some other parts of India? After immense efforts why we are still striving with so many problems in Assam and neighboring states? The issue remains the same. We need social balance in society. We still need to provide basic necessities to our citizen.

Corruption, government and politics have become synonyms in India now. Certainly a big issue and it needs some concrete solution. Generally government is supposed to fight with corruption but in our case, government itself is involved in corruption. Judiciary is providing some aid but it’s not enough to cure this disease. Let’s join hands to fight this ill and provide a long term relief to our nation. We (citizen of India) surely know the cure for this disease; we just need some guts to apply it.

Boosting on our achievements is good as it augments to our morale and adds confidence but if we do not consider these challenges, we can’t think of a bright and beautiful India which we lovingly call India of 2020.

Good thoughts. - Amitava Ganguli, Kolkata - Sept. 12, 2007

Valid points. I think each country has its share of troubles and it will always be, but if you see progress we have done within these 60 years, it's tremendous and a great future is waiting for us. In a recent survey it was mentioned that Indian youth are most optimistic in the world and no need to say why J. Recent victory in T20 World Cup is the best example what youth can achieve. When America was of 60, it was totally in civil war but see where it is today. - Brajesh Kumar - Sept. 28, 2007
