According
to a recent survey by
ODI, UK, Delhi is the top
destination for the migrants for Biharis. In
spite of having the financial capital of India,
Mumbai, in its midst, Biharis do not find
Maharashtra even among the top five destinations
for migration. Punjab, West Bengal, Uttar
Pradesh and Haryana are the other destinations
preferred by the Biharis.
What is noteworthy is that this survey pertains
to 2005-06 and hence a period which precedes the
recent anti-Bihari tirade. Another study by
TISS
and IPSS had estimated the migrants from Bihar
to Maharashtra to a
puny 2.3% and 3.5% of the
new migrants to Mumbai respectively.
All this makes one wonder what is all this fuss
about Biharis swamping Mumbai and changing its
culture. Are these just political gimmicks?

One
thing we should also see that this
is just a survey carried out taking
one factor into consideration the
volume of money sent as per first
survey,
That could vary depending upon the
place and the people sending it.
The second survey is also quite old
most of data collected from 2001,
the same figures could have been
applied if the trend would have been
constant in terms of influx of the
people at the same rate in
Maharashtra.
I agree with you it being political
gimmick even though the figures
would have been different.
Culture shift cannot happen just in
a period of decade or so, and I do
no think that Bihari has ever being
involved in forcing their culture to
any one else.
In the country like India, where
every one is free to choose their
culture, their religion, this
culture change should always be out
of question.
It is also well known that over the
time, political parties have never
missed the chance to take issue like
religion, regionalism, cast etc for
their political benefit. This is
recent is one example.
It is also not hidden that the
person who has started all these has
done this to gain popularity in the
state but in negative sense. To get
some political foothold in area of
politics but totally by using
negative mean.
This is just politics. - Onkar

After a long time, I am writing to
this section although I have been a
regular visitor. Just one question
to asked, where Hyderabad fits in
the migration destinations ? The
reason behind asking is because I am
working as an IT professional in
Hyderabad and am amazed to the
number of Bihari labourers working
here. If the number is sufficient
then could this data be forwarded to
union railways minister, Sri Lalu
Prasad Yadav to increase the number
of trains from Patna to Hyderabad. -
