Every
year for the last 25-30 years there
is flood in North Bihar. We have to
think of something concrete to stop
this sort of calamity which is
happening every year. For 4-6 months
flood water remains in the farming
field. Crop productivity is down as
fields cannot be cultivated during
floods. There is loss of lives,
property, crops etc. Why not
government took the matter seriously
and do something concrete to stop
this climatic madness? I hope the
government of Bihar will appoint
some panel of scientists, engineers
etc to study the cause and to find a
solution.
I have some ideas which I put
forward for the cause:
1) Study the whole North Bihar area,
may be beyond this. See the data for
the last 25-30 years. Pinpoint the
major areas which are frequently
flooded. Take satellite imagery for
mapping the area.
2) Forestation.
3) Build small dams.
4) Build channels to divert water to
less flooded areas.
5) De-siltation of major rivers like
Kosi, Burhi Gandak, Sone, and most
importantly, Ganga.
I appeal to the state as well as the
Central government to do something.
There may be other major issues
also. It is high time we started to
think seriously. - Amit, MI, USA

The
flood in the Kosi river is not an
ordinary flood it is catastrophe
.The mighty Kosi river is now not
flowing within its embankments, it
has changed its course and has
devastated the large area of Supaul,
Araria, Madhepura and Purnia
District. These areas were flood
free for almost five to Six decades.
At least 3 million people are
affected by this flood. It will be a
great challenge for the both Nepal
and Bihar government to repair the
breach in the mighty Kosi river.
Things will become worse day by day
as already 3 million people are
trapped in flood waters and are
facing immense hardship. People are
already facing shortage of food and
medicine. The road and rail network
in these areas has been washed away
by the flood waters. The water
logging in the large area will give
birth to many diseases.
This flood is not an ordinary one
and is going to be the biggest
challenge for the state of Bihar. I
hope that Bihari leaders both in
central and state government will
join hands to fight this devastating
flood. - Sangeet Jha - Aug. 26, 2008
My
family members are in Murliganj.
They have lost their home due to the
damage by the Kosi flooding. They
are on someone's rooftop. Why isn't
the government doing something to at
least get these people to drier
ground so that they can go on with
their lives?
I may not be a born Bihar but I love
it and my family there just the
same. The government going around
and looking at the damage done is
not going to help the people whose
lives are lost or are surviving with
no help from anyone except
themselves. - Susan Efa - Aug.

Hi PD,
First of all three cheers for
excellent new website design.
When we had any calamity in past we
see so many pointers in media be it
print or electronic, where people
can donate money which can be used
for rehabilitation.
There is vast flood in Bihar, but no
such pointers available.
Many people in my organisation feel
the pain and are willing to
contribute but we don't have any
such information. Can you please
provide some relief organisations
contact numbers and their address
who are working for Bihar floods
where we can provide our bit. -
