An Appeal to Media-men

I find most of you operate from Patna and manufacture some news. Some headlines are not only useless but harmful too, as it provides unnecessary publicity to some persons and incidents that must just get ignored. How does a headline such as ‘Bihar’s love guru has a message for Thackeray’, serve any purpose? And is it true that ’Nalanda may turn Singur for Nitish’? Is the story about the row over Mauritius PM’s caste true?

I wish the media-men provided some useful investigative reporting on the projects that can change the face of Bihar. People at large depend on them for knowing the real story. Why can’t the same media-men move out from Patna and go inside rural Bihar? We keep on hearing about the unique thrust of Nitish’s government on building of rural road and providing electrification. Should the media-men tell the people the real status? Is there not a single success story from the people of Bihar that can tell about the innovation and entrepreneurship of the people of Bihar with the change in administration? If at all the situation in Nalanda is bad, Can’t the reporter move in the villages and provide the real story about the compensation that the farmers are getting or the corruption among the officers that are expected to administer the compensation?

People expect media to keep a watch on lofty programmes and projects launched by any government and report about its execution. We hear from media at least about two distinct types of projects: the first related to a large number of educational institute of excellence such as IIT, and IIM being set up in Bihar for the first time, and the second is about a large number of proposals to set up industrial units as available on the website of Bihar State Government. Should not the media-men report about the real progress of those educational institutions or industrial units that have got sanctions about two years ago? Are the people offering the proposals for setting up the industrial units and seeking the sanctions genuine ones?

There is another area where the media can provide assistance to the authority. It can report on all the existing institutions and industrial units: Why don’t the existing ones perform as the best ones in its categories in the other states of the country? Bihar needs help of media. Negative reporting may provide some quick applause from some, but will hardly help the process of the rebuilding of Bihar.

- Arjun Mahto - Mar. 1, 2008
