Patna: The first ever Air Ambulance of the nation opened at the Patna Airport on Thursday offering 24x7 service to those in urgent medical need requiring treatment at hospitals in Delhi or Kolkata.

Family members of patients in Patna now won't have to rely on shady brokers to arrange for an emergency flight to Delhi or Kolkata as the new service began operating at the Patna Airport allowing people to book a helicopter completely equipped with essential medical tools allowing the patient to be swiftly flown to hospitals better than those available in the state.

The service was inaugurated by Bihar Health Minister Mangal Pandey amid much fanfare.

As reported, one will have to pony up nearly Rs. 5 lakh for a quick flight to Delhi while a trip to Kolkata would cost about Rs. 7.5 lakh.

From booking a helicopter to transporting a patient to a hospital in Delhi would take roughly six hours. This is a bed-to-bed service meaning the patient will never have to leave the bed while being moved to a hospital in Delhi or Kolkata, Air Ambulance coordinator Anshu Aman said.

The flight will include a team of doctors and a maximum of two members from the patient's family, he said adding similar facilities will soon be started from other districts in Bihar.
